Anyone can get brown hair to honey in one day. Getting there with the ends still worth having takes four visits and somebody willing to wait.

First two sessions in foil, taking the mid-lengths up two levels at a time; the last two freehand, feathering into what was already there. Between them, a bond treatment at home and a gloss to keep the tone honest. She sent me a photograph from the fourth one and I have used it ever since to explain what patience buys.

A two-chair room above the simit oven on Akarsu Yokusu. Colour built for the grow-out, cuts done dry, six clients a day at most - so nobody sits in foils waiting for me to come back. Colour consultations are free and take twenty minutes.
