She had been tinting warm brown over grey for eleven years and wanted out, but not through a year of stripes. The answer was to stop fighting the grey and start editing it.

A soft blend through the darkest sections so nothing reads as a stripe, then a clear gloss with a whisper of blue pigment to take the yellow out of the white hair. Two and a half hours. She said it was the first time in a decade she had liked a photograph of herself.

A two-chair room above the simit oven on Akarsu Yokusu. Colour built for the grow-out, cuts done dry, six clients a day at most - so nobody sits in foils waiting for me to come back. Colour consultations are free and take twenty minutes.
